It is encouraging that Longton Players are carrying on the great British tradition of Pantomime, especially in this their 40th Anniversary Year. Congratulations in involving the local community and introducing new members, always a good sign for any Amateur Society. Well done to all the children taking part. They were so enthusiastic and were obviously enjoying the experience. The very young ones were delightful, one or two certainly had the “Aaah” factor. Mums and Dads, Grandmas and Grandads must have been very proud. Congratulations must go to Chaperones and helpers who ensured that all the young ones were on stage at the appropriate times.
There were some very good performances. I particularly enjoyed Sheridan Rawlings as the Soothsayer, who had good comic timing. The Sheriff of Nottingham, John Coxhead was convincingly nasty and was completely in character and produced some great reactions from the audience. Josephine Turner as Robin Hood gave a confident performance in this iconic role, whilst Daniel Haresnape as Much The Miller’s son showed his versatility and experience. Nickit and Scarper, Liz Hobin and Joan Miller, made the most of their comedic capers and were a good foil for The Sheriff. I did feel vocals needed more work. Some of the principal’s solos and duets were weak with a lack of projection. Dialogue however was first class.
The innovative projection of the Sheriff’s dream sequence was excellent and added a different dimension to the show. Lighting and Sound were an integral part of the production, together with costumes and props and added to the overall atmosphere. Director, James Miley and Musical Director, Bronwen Bracegirdle and Choreographer, Catherine Grilli, are to be congratulated on a most enjoyable evening.
