In celebrating their 120th year, the Society took us on a delightful musical journey back in time from 1904 up to 2000. Musical items were wide ranging with numbers by lyricists and composers including Gilbert & Sullivan; Rodgers & Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Learner & Lowe, Irving Berlin and Stephen Schwartz. The cabaret opened with Anne Rice delightfully singing ‘Anything Goes’ followed by Amy Sutherland, Andrew Tasker and Grant-Scott Johnston joining together in ‘Friendship’. This set the scene beautifully for the programme which was to follow. It is not possible to mention each musical item or name those in ensembles and individual soloists but it would be remiss of me not to refer to my own particular highlights. Andrew Tasker’s powerful interpretation of the Soliloquy from Carousel was outstanding. I was also further captivated with the rhythmic musical arrangement of ‘I Could Have Danced All Night’ which was presented by the full cast immediately followed with an excellent medley of songs from the great ‘Fiddler on The Roof’. Act Two opened with ‘Hernando’s Hideaway’ from the Pajama Game presented by the full cast before leading into songs from ‘The Pirates of Penzance’ and ‘The Mikado’ sung by Catriona Turk, Anne Rice, and Jennifer Hughes and also Willie Cunningham‘s comic rendering of the Mikado’s Song. The Webber Love Trio was simply outstanding, brilliantly sung by Amy Sutherland, Catriona Turk and Nikki Johnstone. The company closed the cabaret with ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?’ followed by a beautiful arrangement of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ This was another wonderful cabaret presented by the company with content appealing to a wide range of tastes. My congratulations to the entire company and production team Jon-Luke Kirton and Amy Sutherland for providing what was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s entertainment!
