This year’s Revue was in four sections entitled GODS, IDOLS, MONSTERS and MAGIC. The selection of musical numbers in each section was varied and pertinent to the title and it was refreshing to hear new material in this challenging programme.

‘Hello’ (Book of Mormon) got the GODS section off to an interesting start with each performer engaging well with the audience. There were some fine soloists and ensemble singing in this section. The company led by Alison gave a  particularly stirring rendition of ‘Gods Love Nubia’ (Aida)

‘Alexander Hamilton’ from the show Hamilton was new to me. A vocally strong Andrew was in fine voice and was successfully supported  by the chorus. Tim’s ‘Oh What A Circus’ (Evita) was also delivered with conviction. There were some real fun numbers integrated into this part of the programme. ’Man Or Muppet’ (Muppets) complete with puppets was most entertaining. The more mature ladies were not afraid to let their hair down in Victoria Woods most amusing ‘Ballad of Barry and Freda’ . The Floral Dance‘ too was fun and well received by the audience..

Act 2 opened with most impressive costumes and lighting creating the spooky atmosphere depicting the Monsters in ‘There’s a Light’ (Rocky Horror Picture Show) and ‘When You’re An Addams’ (Addams Family). Claire B’s ‘The Mist’ (Dracula The Musical) was sung with sincerity and contrasted well with the previous numbers.

M.A.M.A’s spring production is Spamalot. Alison and Dougal gave us a taste of the show with ‘The Song That Goes Like This’ performed with panache and confidence.

The final section MAGIC gave yet more opportunities to demonstrate the strength of the  ensemble work and the many talented individual performers in the company.

A ‘Mama Mia Medley’ followed by ‘Motown Medley’ was the perfect finale for this show which was a compilation  of modern, humorous and romantic numbers which together worked well.

M.A.M.A. Revue provides an opportunity for all. While there are many talented young people in the company it is good to see some of the older members given a chance to perform as soloists or in small ensembles and indeed there are still some fine voices and performers amongst them. ‘Mr. &Mrs. Paul’ was charming. This was a very well compiled programme which was well staged with effective lighting and costumes to suit the themes.

 A thoroughly enjoyable revue.
