RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET written and created by Bob Carlton was chosen for the group’s 40th anniversary celebratory show.  Described as a jukebox musical, “Return to the Forbidden Planet”, is loosely based on “The Tempest”.  Set on a spaceship,  the versatile and talented cast made the audience smile and tap their feet to some classic songs including a well rehearsed and executed opening number “Wipeout”, followed by “Good Vibrations” and “Great Balls of Fire”.  All the songs were performed with gusto and enthusiasm.

The spaceship interior was realistically created with great attention to detail with all manner of screens, lights and instruments.  The set was excellent, well built and designed and the props were well used by the cast.  The costumes fitted well and the crew uniforms very smart.  Ariel’s costume was particularly striking and effective.

The lighting was excellent, especially the flashing lights and smoke which were superb and complemented the production.  There was great use of multi-media.   The live music was provided by Michel Wooldridge (Keyboard) and Chaz Mcleod (Drums).    Unfortunately, occasionally the balance of music and singing was uneven making it difficult to understand the lyrics and dialogue, especially when American accents were used.

The talent of the performers resounded throughout this production.  It was obvious that a considerable amount of work and effort had gone into the evening.  There were some strong performances notably from Chris Andrews as Cookie, Brian Drew as Ariel The Robot and Pete Cook who took over the role of Doctor Prospero at short notice.  Congratulations to the production team led by Creative and Musical Director, Lesley Nicholls and Choreographer, Michele Gulrajani for an enjoyable evening.
