On a cold night I was warmly welcomed by Waveney Light Opera Group for their production of Rent. A show that portrays a diverse, powerful message throughout.

Each character interacts with other members of the cast to create the storyline of backstreet life and hardship. This worked well in most scenes. Characterisations were strong with lots of energy.

The performance of the songs in this operetta were intense and because of the tale being told through the music, diction is important for understanding the plot and thought given to the words. I felt that the hard work in dramatizing the different roles within the cast had been achieved with success.

At times the stage appeared overcrowded and needed a little more format. The setting, scenery and props were apt for the era and location. I liked the different levels used for effect.

The lighting was basic and the cast need to be aware of where the lights fall on the stage.

Sitting in the audience I found that the sound level of the mics varied from person to person. The band although they were set within the scenery were suitably part of the whole.

I really enjoyed “Seasons of Love”, the harmony singing in “Will I lose my dignity”, the emotion in “Take me baby or leave me” and Angel’s death scene was very moving. Well done.

A thoroughly enjoyable emotional evening with WLOG and their rendition of Rent.

Thank you to all involved.
