“Relatively Speaking” by Alan Ayckbourn, originally titled “Meet my Father”, was his first play to be a major success in London’s West End in 1967. Since then it has been staged by professional and amateur companies and still attracts audiences who appreciate his skilful, witty and well constructed plots.

The play opened to an interesting set in the bed sitting room of Ginny’s London flat in 1965. Sarah Vallantine as Ginny and Phil Allan as Greg, both newcomers to Poulton Drama set the scene with enthusiasm and confidence. However as the audience tried to work out why a “rogue” pair of slippers was under the bed and why many flowers were discovered in the flat, sometimes the dialogue was a little hurried leading to a lack of clear diction.

The second scene on the patio at the home of Philip and Sheila was a complete contrast in design to the first and I must congratulate Colin Johnston and Steve Marshall on their design and construction. Stuart Holden as Philip, Ginny’s older lover showed his experience and versatility as the plot unfolded, whilst Stephanie Heney was outstanding as Sheila his wife. She was the perfect foil for Stuart’s character. I am a fan of Ayckbourn’s work and the four actors would have been much appreciated by the author. David Twizell, Director has ensured the pace never faltered and he must be pleased with his first project for Poulton Drama. Sound and lighting effects were excellent, just what I have come to expect from my visits to this lovely venue. Thank you once again for your very warm welcome to my wife and myself.
