I came in the expectation of a good evening and I was not disappointed. This show was a nicely judged and varied cabaret with something for everyone with music like Brush Up Your Shakespeare, Windy City and Edelweiss from well-loved shows to newer songs like Hungry Eyes, The Heat Is On In Saigon and I Know Where I’ve Been. All were well sung and cleverly choreographed with appropriate changes of costume. The first half of the programme entitled Music on Film starting with 76 Trombones and finishing with Anything Goes set a high standard. Then the next half called Conflict got better and better. The black and white war pictures at the back set the scene. The men showed their quality in Red and Blood from Les Miserable. Then a tribute to the 1914-18 war had the audience glued to the verses - not often sung nowadays - of It’s a Long Way to Tipperary and joining in the chorus. The war tableaux were skilfully arranged, the Martin Guerre number How Many Tears and Don’t Tell My Father from the Civil War were movingly sung solos and the raunchy rendering of Don’t Tell Mama from Cabaret successfully shifted the mood up a gear. The pace and tone altered again in a beautifully sung Roses of Picardy and in the humour of All for One from Spamalot. The curtain closed after the company sang the modern Next to Me. But this is just a brief outline of the night. All singers, whether in unison, harmony or solo, showcased themselves well, along with a musical ensemble that sympathetically accompanied them. This was an excellent night’s entertainment.
