What a fun time I had when I attended Digswell’s Pantomime this year. Although a rather long production the time seemed to fly by and this was mostly due to the slick delivery of the lines, joke after joke after joke and a cast that were obviously enjoying themselves.
The opening number “Mr. Blue Sky” was a good choice and prepared the audience for an entertaining evening.
Huw Palmer performed well as Will The Woodcutter. He demonstrated that he is learning his craft in pantomime and every year gains a little more confidence.
Connie Marshall was well cast as Red Riding Hood and vocals were good. I really enjoyed “Make You Feel My Love”, projection as good and you had a good connection with your audience. Well done.
Once again Pip Gray went all out for fun with his portrayal of “Granny”. His confident repour with his audience made for natural laughter even if some of the jokes were a little risky at times. Cues were picked up quickly and everyone warmed to the character immediately.
Andrew Sibley was a convincing “Mr. Wolf” and I thought the costume and face makeup most appropriate, well done Alice Palmer and team.
Mary Goodfellow as “Ursula” gave a creditable performance as a second baddy, an interesting twist to the story.
Ella Lounds was well cast as “Fin” showing us how versatile this young actress is becoming.
Stuart Carnegie and Esther Bishop as “Bark and Trunk” worked perfectly together. Esther showing yet another string to her bow as an up and coming comedienne. I would have liked to have seen a comedy duet at some point, particularly as they were bouncing so well off each other. Perhaps next time!
Lucy Portalska as “Jenny”, second principal girl, was convincing in her role and her rendition of “Not That Girl” was one of the highlights for me. This talented young singer has much to offer. Good work.
Once again Kevin Rayment displayed his love of playing odd characters, this time a butcher and a fat man. He is like a pocket Merlin who can come up with any character required and completely throw himself into the part. This is real amdram’ commitment.
Marnus Preis, Imogen Carnegie and Darcie White were the three little pigs, Rodney, Albert and Derek respectively. Three completely different piggy’s with different attitudes, showing different facial expressions and body language. These youngsters were well cast and I look forward to hearing Darcie White sing solo at some time in the future. A strong voice here.
There was confident acting and singing from other cast members and chorus and choreography was suitable for all the performers.
Scenery was executed well and a thoughtful lighting plot added to the overall impression of the piece.
Digswell’s pantomime was perfect for the venue even if was rather long. Never the less, the cast seemed to enjoy it, the audience enjoyed it and I certainly enjoyed it.
Congratulations to you all.
Thank you for your hospitality.
