MILLOM AMATEUR OPERATIC SOCIETY (MAOS)

‘RAISE THE ROOF’ FUNDRAISING CONCERT

The last time I reviewed a show for MAOS, I commented I would have preferred live music to backing tracks, and for Raise the Roof they took up my suggestion. The unsung backstage, sound and lighting ladies and gentlemen made up a very enjoyable musical combo, thank you Millom.

The show was a very enjoyable musical evening, featuring members of MAOS, and guest groups from around the area. The MAOS music combo and kids got the show off to a rousing start with two numbers from the band, and a short medley from the kids from Mary Poppins.

I particularly enjoyed male harmony quartet, VOCE,who sang quite superbly, ‘Love Changes Everything ‘from Aspects of Love, and ‘Somwhere’ from West Side Story, a real treat for the audience.

There were strong performances from Rebecca and Dave Bailey, singing great numbers from Showboat and Jesus Christ Superstar. The Phoenix Singers gave us a medley from Oliver, which always goes down well, and the Millom Kids brought the first Act to a close with a couple of numbers from ‘The Sound of Music’.

The second Act got off to a flying start with two numbers from Black Combe School Choir, singing from the Lion King. Anthony Freeman sang I Wont Send Roses from Mack and Mabel, a show I particularly enjoyed directing a number of years ago. There was then a medley from Les Miserables featuring VOCE, Sarah Pinney, Jon Bailey, Holly Saunders, and Trudy Carter Fox. I particularly enjoyed singing along with Mustang Sally performed by the band, a particular favourite of mine. We then went into the finale sequence, featuring the full Ensemble, and ending with ‘Always Look on the Bright Side of Life from Monty Python’s ‘Spamalot’.

I thought the cabaret seating idea was very clever, rather than the formal theatre seating, the audience were able to enjoy a drink, and singalong with the performers in a very relaxed atmosphere.Thank you to everyone concerned for a very enjoyable evening, and well done to Rebecca for pulling it all together. The drive back to Workington was no problem.
