George Bernard Shaw's story of the education of a London flower girl to a member of society is so well known both as a play and the award winning musical "My Fair Lady". Sheila Grew resisted any temptation to present anything to the audience but a stunning piece of drama in the best tradition of the players. The result was an evening of theatre. A beautifully cast play. Everyone quickly established their character. Some scene changes in front of the audience made them aware of the very clever set design. The room changed from Wimpole Street to Mrs Higgin's home before our very eyes. A round of applause for the cast involved was well deserved.
Alan Lowe as Professor Higgins didn't try to imitate Rex Harrison and made the part his own. Roger Shepherd was good as Colonel Pickering and Jill Simkin as Mrs Pearce was delightful and with a lovely soft Scottish accent she was more than a match for the domineering Professor Higgins. Gerry Joyce in the role of Alfred Doolittle was one of the best I have seen and the transformation from dustman to "toff" was worth waiting for! Jennifer Smith as Eliza made the most of the part and was not overshadowed by the Professor. Her "elevation" from the streets was gradual but very effective. The costumes were good and there were a large amount of props. A mention for the music played before the play and during the interval. It was appropriate and stayed well away from the temptation to include anything from the musical. Congratulations to everyone involved.
