Halifax Gilbert and Sulllivan Society's production of Princess Ida, performed at Halifax Playhouse, was a finely crafted musical delight. It was a showcase of talent of all ages, which had been polished and carefully choreographed.

A 3 Act Show, Each Act with its own story to tell in The battle of the Sexes.

Act 1 Sets the scene for the life Hilarion (Leon Waksberg) has lived.
The show opens with Search throughout the Panorama, which was led vocally by Christopher Pilgrim along with the chorus.
The majority of Act 1 is Male led, with some fantastic vocals from Hildebrand (Edward Thornton), Hilarion (Leon Waksberg), Gama (John Tattersall). With a comedic trio of warriors interlude, Arac (Nigel Rothery), Guron (David Prosser) and Scynthius (Richard Grigg). All accompanied with the Chorus.

A short interval followed by Act 2.
The longer of the 3 Acts, opens within the grounds of Castle Adamant, and in which we finally meet Princess Ida (Rowena Thornton) who lives within a female preserve, with all men banished.
This section of the show opens with the Ladies' chorus, along with Melissa (Rachel Prosser), Psyche (Charissa Hutchins) and Sacharissa (Lèonie Thornton).
There were some fantastic moments, as Cyril (Steve Greenwood), Hilarion (Waksberg) and Florian (Pilgrim), gain entry into Castle Adamant, and disguise themselves as fair maidens. Only to be short lived as their cover is quickly blown.

Again, some lovely vocals and harmonies amongst the cast and a great portrayal of each character, Lady Blanche (Kathryn Buxton) and all the Female students.

A stand out performance for Rowena Thornton for her outstanding Vocals.
Her solo performances during Act 2 were so captivating that one could have heard a pin drop.

A second short interval and we were descending into battle. A battle of Brain or Brawn.
Would love win? Or was Princess Ida's heart closed? Would Hilarion be able to conquer?

Again some wonderful musical numbers with full chorus, and of course to finish, a Happily ever after.

The set, although minimal was practical and effective. Subtle scene changes, with strategically placed flags displaying coats of arms, along with stone walls, set the scenes for the medieval story to unfold.
Stage Managed by Paul Matthews and Lighting design by Karl Eaton.
Costumes were traditional and in keeping with the Medieval style.
Which were complimented with aligned Props (Deborah Hammond, Kathryn Buxton and Halifax Thespians).

Musical Director Richard Buxton led a confident Orchestra. Consisting of members from West Yorkshire Orchestra, Square Chapel Orchestra and Friends. With support from James Newby Music.

As a first time visitor to not only the Venue, Society, and Opera.
I was greeted at the door and made to feel incredibly welcome by Society President Andrew Stopford.
Once seated, I was immersed into the Show as soon as the Orchestra began, until the Curtains came down at the end.

The overall production showcased a wealth of talent, which was backed by a creative team both on and off stage.
