One of the most recognised Gilbert and Sullivan Operas was on offer by this society. With a strong set of principals the show set off at a rollicking pace. David Reeves gave a strong performance as The Pirate King, Eileen Reeves was well cast as Ruth.
Arriving on land the pirates are celebrating the 21st birthday of Frederic, who also comes out of his indentures. As a free man he can now persue the pirates, hunt them down and exterminate them.
David Griffiths played a believable Frederic with a super voice. Never having known any women apart from Ruth, it was a shock to be confronted by so many pretty young ladies. Asking if anyone will marry him, Mabel offers him her love. With the entrance of Mabel ( Victoria Goulden), we were treated to a stunning `Poor Wandering One`, her higher register was a joy to listen to.
The daughters Edith (Kathryn Smethurst) and Kate (Rosa Sanchez Garcia) worked well with Mabel and the chorus. David Kay was a great Major G Stanley, His rendition of `A Model Major General` was outstanding. The Sergeant of Police was well played by Ken Rees, having such a deep voice.
This was a most enjoyable show.
Thank You for your kind invitation.
