Pirates of Penzance has a place in the heart of Rugby Operatic Society, it was the first production staged when the society formed.
The story is one well known by Gilbert and Sullivan fans, a tale of love, pirates and duty.
On a set and stage painted beautifully by the society, the cast gave a confident and polished performance. The ensemble numbers were a delight with the performers managing the wordy songs with skill. A particular joy was the scene where the police surround the pirates, the direction, lighting and performance all combined to great effect.
Claire Tyler (Mabel) and Chris Pettitt (Frederick) made their mark in their first production with this society, their duet in act 2 was portrayed well. Simon King was a perfect Pirate King with the right balance of menace and heart, when it comes to orphans.
The production felt full of energy and enthusiasm, all of the elements joined together to produce a polished and enjoyable performance.
