Peter Chater Robinson’s musical version of J M Barrie’s well known story was an ideal vehicle for this group of 53 P2-S1 youngsters, 20 of whom were performing in their first full scale show. With a good mix of lively ensemble and solo numbers there was plenty of scope to show off the singing and dancing talents of the cast. In her first principal role Yasmin Wiseman made an excellent Peter Pan exhibiting strong acting abilities and a delightful voice shown to its best in her solos “You’re Grown Up?” and “Don’t Say Goodbye”. Freya Galashan as Wendy - also taking on her first principal role – was superb in the role as substitute mother to the Lost Boys showing a confidence in her acting and singing belying her youth. Her solo “Peter” in Act One was a delight and her voice blended well with Yasmin’s in the Peter and Wendy duets. Calum Casey-Mckay – another first time principal - was very convincing as the evil Captain Hook. His rendition of “Rich Damp Cake” with the Pirates, staged as a parody of the Great British Bake Off, was a hoot! Harris Barber as Michael and Luca Wishart (another first timer) as John - the Darling brothers – gave good performances with Luca’s antics and facial expressions eliciting many laughs from the audience. Making up the Darling family were Daniel Falconer as Mr Darling and Molly Thomson as Mrs Darling both of whom gave strong support with excellent singing in the family’s number “The Darlings”. Strong support was given by Kyla Falconer (Tinkerbell), Calum Macleod (Natives Chief) and Holly Ellis (Tiger Lily). Mention too must be made of the two “animal” characters - RJ Cimen as an engaging Nana and Oliver Zelazko as a cute pint-sized Crocodile. The groups of Lost Boys, Pirates and Natives all sang and moved well and the full chorus numbers like “Mermaid Lagoon”, “Braves To War” and the finale reprise of “You Gotta Believe” were very strong. The five piece band played well and never overpowered the youthful voices on stage. The simple set was very effective and allowed plenty of space for the choreography in the full company numbers. The lighting too was very effective in setting the various scenes. Well done all Ragamuffins for a delightful evening’s entertainment.
