I have always thought that Peter Pan does not translate too well into the Pantomime genre. Somehow the traditional ‘stuff’ done in pantomimes does not fit well with the morality of the Peter Pan story.
Having said that, Merlin produced their usual magic and gave us a show that was great fun to watch. There was plenty of ‘panto fun’ although I did think there were quite a few missed opportunities for more. Some of what was done seemed a bit too contrived, but that’s panto!
Lisa Bolton was an energetic and delightful Peter Pan; she produced a performance that was a great pleasure to watch. Jeremy Battersby (Smee) was fun to watch and he worked really hard to provide the pantomime experience. Not that the children in the audience would appreciate that hard work, they just enjoyed the fun. Both these performers made it look easy, which I know it is not!
All the rest of the cast gave good performances in their roles, although I did have difficulty hearing the dialogue from those actors who were not mic’d. I would compliment all the young performers who played the Lost Boys and the Indians. They were well drilled, projected well and showed their characters.
The choreography was good and well executed, although I think Gangnam style has worn out its welcome, this production did bring a fresh approach to it, so well done to choreographer Ami Roberts.
The singing was strong in both solo and ensemble numbers and the show was well paced, especially given the scene changes that were necessary for the production. Costumes were excellent and the scenery was very good. Lighting was appropriate and the band did a good job of supporting the singers without drowning them out.
Overall a good afternoon’s entertainment, thank you Merlin.
