I am always blown away at the quality of Dunfermline Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s productions and this year was no exception. A wonderful line-up of principals of the highest calibre graced the stage. George Alexander made a fine Colonel Calverley as did Bill McCall as Lieut The Duke of Dunstable and Martin Tarr as Major Murgatroyd. Michael McFarlane brought a unique feel to the role of Reginald Buthorne and Robin Ozog was a strong contrast as Archibald Grosvenor. Both sang magnificently. Colin Stubbs was effective as Mr Bunthorne’s solicitor. The rapturous maidens – Jen MacLennan, Suzy Burnett, Carol Osborne and Rae Lamond – were all played beautifully and Claire Porterfield was a wonderfully down to earth Patience. The large company had a lot to do and filled the stage to good effect, producing a magnificent sound. The setting was traditional but John Allen had lavished so much care and attention to detail in the lighting to bring it alive. With excellent costumes from The Costume Store, visually, the show was a treat. The boys in their military outfits looked outstanding! The company are indeed fortunate to have a director of Peter McFarlane’s standing and an MD of Eddie MacLennan’s ability, who put so much into the production.
