Gary made very good use of the many facilities available at this theatre including a simple but very effective birdcage style gazebo providing a focal point in a set so suited to this operetta. A good traditional production but the Colonel’s first song had been updated with some lyrics Gilbert would have approved of - and also a nice link with Warhorse! On the musical side David matched this with good interpretation and control resulting in a great sound from the stage and the pit, particularly with the larger choral ensembles. On stage we had a strong team of principals who gave good performances both musically and dramatically, taking full advantage of the opportunities provided in this musical. Rhia Fingerhut was in fine voice as Patience interacting well with Melvyn Edwards (Reginald) and Tony Lawton (Archibald). The comedy side was well handled by Mike McGhee, James Davies and Les Plimbley (The Colonel, Major and Duke) together with the Rapturous Maidens with a particularly strong performance from Helen Walker (Lady Jane). There was full support from the chorus throughout. The costumes, including matching  shoes, were great with a nice pastel colour mix on the ladies’ side, enhanced with good lighting and the stage management handled efficiently at all times. This was a very enjoyable production and good entertainment which was obviously approved by an appreciative audience.
