This was a new script written by Sam Crawley of KADKAT theatre company. Sam combined many characters from different pantomimes and also from the world of Marvel superheroes. These key characters from various shows including Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Puss in Boots and Thor combined to create the Panto Posse. The story followed the story of Buttons the Dustman who was kidnapped by the evil villain of the show The sheriff of not-Keyham (a local reference to a section of Plymouth).
There were a number of good choices made for the songs in this production including 9-5 by Dolly Parton. These tended to lack a little bit of energy however and it would appear that some of the cast were not necessarily fully confident in their words to all of the songs.
There was a great number of costumes required throughout with some really key, recognisable characters. The costumes were good and effective and were recognisable to the audience and helped to identify each character easily. Dame Thora-A had a distinctively marvel-like appearance. Hood (not Robin) was also very clearly recognisable.
Set was simple and easily changed from one scene to the next with the use of hinged walls. I liked the UV paint scene in the Nuclear waste dump and thought this was quite effective.
The audience seemed to be filled to the brim with a selection of cubs and scouts from the local area and it was clear that all of these were absolutely besotted with the show and were shouting and booing away throughout the show. They were clearly enjoying themselves a great deal as they got into the Christmas spirit. I was sat next to a Plymouth Councillor who was also enjoying all of the jokes that were being made about many issues the cast have noted around Plymouth. This councillor certainly enjoyed the jokes about MP’s and Plymouth City Council.
The cast were committed to their roles and were engaged with the audience. It was clear that they were enjoying themselves throughout the performance. Abanazar had some good comedy and characterisation to his performance.
