Based on a true incident set in suburban Ruislip Surrey, Hugh Whitemore`s play tells of the events leading up to the arrest of 60`s spy Gordon Lonsdale and two of his accomplices Peter and Helen Kroger. Their neighbour`s house, owned by the Jackson family, is used by intelligence services to reveal their spying activities.
A gripping, but rather slow moving and very wordy play was well enacted by the cast. Bob Jackson and his wife Barbara, portrayed by Chris Gale and Susan Devaney give a good account as the plain suburban family caught up in the events. Charlotte Gale as Susan their teenage daughter gave a most creditable performance. There were also first rate displays by Peter Wilmot as Peter Kroger and Alicia Bloundele as his vivacious wife Helen. I liked Simon Brister as the civil servant who had to oversee the dealings with the Jacksons, a most commendable portrayal. Good support came from Fran Happe as Thelma and Pauline Revill as Sally who completed the cast.
A very enjoyable evening.
