My husband and I absolutely love Madness and we were so looking forward to seeing a new show for me that was packed full of memorable songs from our younger years. The simple yet effective set ensured there was ample space on stage for the cast to show the audience some modern energetic choreography. Always challenging I’m sure when working as a team of three, especially for Rob not only directing but also taking a key role.

The synopsis tells the complex story well, that said it was slightly confusing for some audience members (overheard in the auditorium) until the penny dropped that it’s actually a simple tale of what their lives would have been like IF Joe had made a different choice on the fateful night of his 16th Birthday.

Dylan Norris played the much-troubled Joe Casey, he should be commended on his many lightning-fast costume changes from Good to Bad Joe. Melanie Bateman played the love of his life Sarah. My absolute favourite scene in the whole show being a wonderful heartfelt version of ‘It Must be Love’. Sharron Tozer played Joe’s Mom Kath, who tried in vain to protect the family unit and ultimately  save their home from demolition. Sharron bought much experience to the cast with strong vocals throughout, however sadly she was let down by technical issues on the night I attended that were not the Societies responsibility and I do hope this was rectified for the rest of the run. Unfortunately, much the same could be said of some of the lighting, with cast members standing in darkness on more than a few occasions, again not their fault. Well done to everyone for carrying on regardless! Property developer Mr Pressman was played with authority by Paul Wozniak. Steven Young gave a strong performance as Joe’s Dad, he has a lovely tone to his voice and was well suited when singing ‘One Better Day’ with good Joe and Kath.

Without mentioning everyone listed in the programme the main cast were supported by a strong ensemble. Janette Stringer really made the most of her part when playing a hilarious “Older” character. I couldn’t finish sharing my thoughts without mentioning Billie & Angie – Katie Elliot and Emily Holtom respectively. During all the chorus numbers my eyes were drawn to watch their every move. Quirky colourful characters and both amazing dancers, always at the front along with Rob Bateman this must have really helped lead the company through the complex movement throughout.

To summarise this was an enjoyable production that could have been really great had it not been for the issues mentioned above, that said I would never reduce scores for things that are out of the company's control. The band did not overpower the cast at any point, and they all looked like they were having the best time ever! I’m sure like my husband and myself the whole audience would have been singing the well-known Madness songs for weeks to come, I know we were.
