Our House has at its heart the apparently simple, yet ultimately complex question. ‘What would have happened in my life if I had made one critical choice, rather than another’.  This is a complex question to bring to life and throughout the performance last night, Amanda’s Direction of this hugely talented and energetic Company brought reality and naturalism to the many contrasts, and consequences one critical decision had on a young man’s life and on those around him.

This was an exhilarating ensemble performance, with Amanda’s focus on acting and  Jessica’s excellent choreography both judged to perfection throughout (The twinkling in the eyes during ‘dialogue’ plus the sheer joy in the faces of the Company performing the moves were a testament to their understanding of the cast.).

It’s hard to single out any of the cast for specific mention but praise must go to Sean Goodwin for his apparently limitless energy and portrayal of two contrasting character arcs of ‘Joe Casey’ with equal conviction, that drove the central core of the production.  Catherine Cunningham, Matty Collins, Adam Monk, Aston Fisher, James Murray and Georgia Hodgett-Young all provided essential elements with great skill and enthusiasm leading the rest of the company who were clearly enjoying every minute of the production.

Chris and his 7 piece band brought an excellent depth and balance of sound which complimented the performances which must have been a significant challenge from the enclosed pit on a very hot night!  It was especially pleasing to hear the ‘horn section’ of Sax and Trumpet included which brought the music of Madness to life.  Highlights during the evening were ‘Baggy Trousers’, ‘Wings of a Dove.  ‘It Must be Love’ (which was also a triumph by the ‘Rob’s’ on sound) and the Finale/Encore.

Finally, the lighting design by Tom Mowat and its execution was the best I have seen with only 24 hrs of ‘get in’ and technical rehearsal available. Staging was pleasingly minimal and ‘industrial’, costumes were excellent throughout and the use of minimal naturalistic makeup all added greatly to the production overall.

Congratulations to all and I look forward to seeing you next year.
