I have always been a fan of the music of “Madness” the Group and I was looking forward to their award winning musical “Our House”. I was not disappointed! The show is a mixture of great music and a fascinating story. Hertford Dramatic and Operatic Society certainly achieved the atmosphere required for this show with some good performances from a well chosen cast.
Danny Hurley as Joe and Gemma Pobjoy as Sarah were a very believable couple and their energy and enthusiasm shone through. This was due in no small part to the brilliant changes of the leading mans outfits from good to bad Joe and vice versa.
Stephen Wiley as Reecey impressed with his characterization as the villain of the piece and the characterization of both Del Parcell as Joe’s dad and Cheryl Nicholson as Kath Casey was faultless.
Diction was good throughout but at times the under scoring from the band covered the dialogue and this was not helped by ineffectual control of the mics’ at times.
Direction was good but it was the choreography that really wowed the piece.
Alison Latchford, the choreographer brought in all the recognisable dance moves and many more to ensure the show had life and gusto. She obviously worked with the cast to ensure very good pace... and the show fairly motored along. The enthusiasm and performances presented by the cast showed it to be well rehearsed and enjoyed.
The production team worked hard to bring the essential ‘wow’ that this show needs.
There were no weak links in the casting with everyone playing their roles with panache and confidence, Graham Duncan as Lewis and Will Smith as Emmo being particularly well paired as were Billie played by Alexandra James and Angie played by Katy Bovaird. In both cases a master-class in team work!
The band seemed to enjoy playing this particular score and were an integral part of the evening.
Stage crew, wardrobe and lighting did a sterling job.
I did enjoy this evening and from the reaction of the audience around me this is another successful production from this well established company. Thank you all for your very warm welcome.
