The show revolves around the music of Madness and follows the story of Joe Casey who finds himself in trouble when trying to impress his girlfriend Sarah and he is caught breaking into a new building development. This lands him in trouble with the police, and as the story unfolds, we see Joe, played by Michael Donaghy creating two individual characters, one where he decides to run and the other giving himself up. Michael brought a lot of emotion, energy, and pace to the role, and along with his vocal ability showed his strength of talent throughout his entire performance. Sarah, played by Lydia Clark was equally strong in her role showing strength through her singing and acting. The storyline (while complicated) plays out through the other significant characters in Joe’s life. Joe’s dad played by Brian Toward brought a very solid performance and displayed his versatile range of talent in singing and acting. Kath Casey, Joe’s mother, played by Leanne Roarty-Smith gave a strong performance. The range of other characters bring light and shade to the show and Billie played by Lara Calton and Angie played by Emma Fyfe showed their talents off well, each displaying their unique characters through the strength of their vocal and acting talent. The friends Lewis played by Bryan Armstrong-Jamieson and Emmo played by Lewis Compston brought both comedy and pathos to the roles. Gary Fyfe showed his strong acting and vocal ability as he portrayed the role of the nasty character, Reecey.
Colin McGowan and David Glen showed their diverse abilities playing a range of characters with ease. The ensemble worked hard in this production and ensured the creation of all the different roles were brought to life. The vocal harmonies were strong, and Emma Cluckie should be congratulated for her musical direction ensuring good coordination between the band and chorus, and in particular through the off stage singing. The staging and choreography were fast paced and stylised. The integration of the set changes throughout the production ensured smooth transition between scenes and was well executed, much of the time by the cast, as it was built into the storytelling. Overall, this was an enjoyable and excellent production. Well done!
