This production, which features the music of Madness was given an enthusiastic rendition by a youthful cast, many of whom I expect have graduated from LEOS` successful Youth Company. Using the space created by a minimal, but efficient set, Rob Chilton`s production was fast paced. The well-executed dance routines that interspersed throughout the show were performed at a high tempo by the well-disciplined chorus. Adding to the overall effect was a nicely balanced orchestra.
The story shows the life and challenges of Joe Casey, played most convincingly by Matthew McAuley. Joe`s life, without a father, was difficult, and the story shows the two different ways his life could go, depending on his choices. Matthew was strong vocally and acted with great energy. Complimenting him as his girlfriend Sarah, was Emily May Corner, her vocals were one of the shows highlights.
As Billie, Ellie Simmonds gave a strong portrayal, taking on two roles as one, due to illness. With Robert McAuley and Jack David as Joe`s friends, Lewis and Emmo giving rousing backing with great enthusiasm. Harvey Latter, playing Reecey the villain of the story, was suitably menacing in his efforts trying to lead our hero into a life of crime.
Admirable backup came from the parents played by Claire Collishaw as Kath Casey, and Gavin Owen as his deceased father. Both gave moving portrayals. Simon Parker played the not so honest property developer Harold Pressman with great aplomb.
Again, a final word must go to the hardworking chorus who boosted the production with their high octane, well delivered dances, the show would not have been the same without them.
