This production is based on the energetic and madcap songs of Madness and tells the story of Joe Casey. On the night of his sixteenth birthday takes his girlfriend Sarah out and in an effort to impress her breaks into a building site. As expected, the police turn up and at this point Joe’s life split’s into two. The good Joe who stays to help and the bad Joe, who flees. Steve Hyett’s production used a simple but very effective and well-used set. I really enjoyed the ‘Driving in my Car’ and ‘Wings of a Dove’ numbers. Joe Casey and Sarah were played by Jason Broome (who had some very quick changes) and Kelly Plater who lead this energetic company well. Dave Steventon playing Joe’s Dad sang very well and had a good head for heights and he sang most of his songs from a platform half way up the set. Craig Broome and Reece Buchanan gave good support along with Anne Hewitt. Sarah’s friends, Billie and Angie (Emily Stephens and Claire Harrison acted well as did Craig Smith as bad boy Reecey. Derek Jepson as building site owner Mr. Pressman played the part well. During the opening number the band drowned out what was happening on stage but settled down well so every word could be heard. The costumes were colourful as they should be. Well-done Great Barr.
