For forty years Andy Antony worked for London Underground then he decided that a change was required so he relocated to Grantham where he joined the local dramatic society. In May 2018, inspired by his new friends in this group he began writing his first play.
In the late 1970’s/early 80’s Andy had taken part in talent competitions and reflecting on these experiences he set to and wrote a highly entertaining play entitled “One night in Grantham”. His friends at the Grantham Dramatic Society naturally encouraged and supported him to produce this play which embodied a story about a talent competition and the competitors taking part.
Having written the story, Andy composed the songs that the vocalists would be required to perform and set out how they would deliver their renditions in order to demonstrate their talents as entertainers to the audiences. During the staging of this play the audience is exposed to the tensions nearly all performers experience, especially when things go wrong and they are trying to make the audience laugh - in short the ups and downs of an entertainer’s life.
With the wealth of experience that Mary O’Neill has acquired directing an amazing variety of plays over 63 years, she was the natural choice to lead the players forward. Under Mary’s guidance we saw a cast of fifteen people step on to the stage and transform themselves into stars of the entertainment world – a really fantastic achievement! Thank you all who were involved in this slick production which contained a phenomenal amount of fun delivered to the “Gold standard”. Thank you Andy for the gift of a great script.
