What a great afternoon at Blairgowrie..
4 well directed and highly entertaining plays excellently performed by the talent of Blairgowrie Players Drama Group coupled with a lovely afternoon tea.
'Little Bro Morning and Big Sis Afternoon' by Mike Tibbets is a beautiful moving story. A father is driven by despair to abandon his family after the tragic death of his wife. He leaves his children to run successfully a family home, unknown to any authorities. When money eventually runs out, they have one day left together. This is a fascinating and ultimately moving story, delivered compassionatley by Lottie (Ruby Bell) and Dunkie (Harris Brown) Dad (Keith Mackenzie) Social Workers (Tim Marchant and Kerry McFadden) and inspiring much debate in the car back about the fate of the lottery ticket.
'Dream Jobs' by Graham Jones. Five teenage girls Angela Joan, Mandy, Beverly and Fiona dream of the romantic, exciting jobs they would like while waiting for interviews with an employment service - the dreams are enacted by all the girls together. In each case there is a rude awakening. Finally, Beverly, the clearest sighted, brings them down to earth, forcing them to realise that their characters and abilities will fit them for only the drabbest of occupations. Playing the roles respectively Sophie Hill, Honor Wood, Hannah Galloway, Lauren Blair-Morrison and Cara Donaldson were superb in their characterisations of each girl.
Peas' by David Tristram features two characters Gerry (Tim Marchant) and Daisy (Kerry McFadden) being the first guinea pigs to test out a new dating agency. They soon discover just how much they have in common. Performing well and in stark contrast to the first play, these two talented actors demonstrated they have all the skills to create many faces. Providing all the comedy and akward moments deserving of the script this was another sure winner of the afternoon.
Finishing the afternoon was 'Macbeth' by Geoff Bamber for which the company won the Billy Gordon Trophy for Best Youth Performance and it is easy to see why. There should be three witches, but one of them is having problems with her satellite navigation system. Eventually they give a fateful prediction to Macbeth, who likes the idea of being the new king enough to dispatch the old one. Much murder and wringing of hands ensues. All this and a mad Scottish doctor, trees and of course tele-tubbies! Too many young actors to name but safe to say that Blairgowrie has an abundance of talent, bucket fulls of character, excellent comic timing and enthusiasm for performance.
Well done to all. If you get a chance to see this group perform you will not be disappointed.
