This was a well chosen show to help the society celebrate its 75th Anniversary. It is a logistical nightmare today involving children in amateur productions but the society managed to accommodate some 30 youngsters spilt into 2 teams for this production. I saw the Jammy Dodgers team and here Oliver was played by 9 year old Ben Hayfield. He was a delight with a good singing voice and very clear diction. The Artful Dodger was ably played by Connor Jones and he led an enthusiastic group of children in Fagin’s Gang.
Teresa Biddell was an ideal Nancy as she has a tremendous stage presence, a strong singing voice and excellent characterisation. I did, however, feel sorry for her in the song Oom-Pah-Pah as the noise and business on stage was a bit of a distraction at times. I liked John Biddell’s interpretation of Fagin and he certainly held the stage and the audience in a very well enunciated rendering of ‘Reviewing the Situation’. Stephen Higgins was a very convincing Bill Sykes and Karl Eyre Smith was in fine voice as Mr. Bumble. There was some good support from the other principals and chorus.
The very effective set was well used by the cast, stage crew and technicians. Well done!
