The opening of this production was not the usual street scene but Dicken’s home with Dickens reading from his book. Screens and projections were used in the auditorium to keep the audience abreast of time, and the finale ended the story on a positive note with a celebration for the new Queen Victoria. Lighting was dramatic and played an important role throughout, establishing the mood for each scene. ‘Consider Yourself’ was a super number and incorporated a troupe of circus performers on Paddington Green. Martin Sampson was the best Fagin I’ve seen; his accent was sound and ‘Pick a Pocket’ was a delight. The MD controlled the orchestra admirably and the violinist in ‘Reviewing the Situation’ was excellent. Choreography was imaginative and performed confidently by both children and adults in this visually attractive production. Acting and vocal ability from the principals was strong, and the director certainly added something different to this rather dark but enjoyable musical.
