In presenting the Lionel Bart classic, this was a different musical for HODC which required the recruitment of 47 children. In the title role, Ciaran Rogers (12) provided a first class performance as the orphan Oliver Twist, as did Ciaran McGuire (12) in portraying a highly spirited Artful Dodger, the cleverest of Fagin's pickpockets. John Carr excelled as the miserly Fagin, revelling in the comedy moments and also bringing out the pathos in the character whilst ‘Reviewing the Situation’. Similarly, Peter Scally provided great characterisation as a suitably sinister Mr Sowerby, perfectly matched with Cathy Taylor (Mrs Sowerby) to bring out the comedy in the Undertaker’s shop. Colin Vincent displayed great stage presence in his portrayal of Mr Bumble, the pompous official of the Workhouse and was very well paired with Margaret Thomson (Widow Corney) whose comedy timing was excellent. Gordon Watson was on top form as the menacing Bill Sykes and was joined with Suzanne Gilliland who skilfully captured the part as the protective Nancy. I must praise the performance of all the children on stage featured in the Workhouse and who also doubled up as Fagin’s gang. They were all fantastic! Strong support was provided from all other principles and the chorus in their singing and choreography. Special mention must also be made to Chester (Bullseye), a most obedient dog. Well done to one and all for an entertaining show.
