Despite the dark subject matter this show is full of wonderful songs and comic moments. The chorus of youngsters playing the Orphans/Fagin’s Gang threw themselves wholeheartedly into every scene they were in from the opening “Food, Glorious Food” through “It’s a Fine Life” to the rousing finale medley with strong singing and well drilled movement. The adult chorus were not to be out done, enjoying themselves to the full in a rumbustious “Oom-Pah-Pah” in the Act 2 opening and showing off their singing prowess in a well-staged “Who Will Buy?” Comedy was in the safe hands of the well-matched Susan Gillespie as Widow Corney and Chris Hewett as the hen–pecked Mr Bumble. Mallory Peter as Nancy had good stage presence and her rendition of “As Long as He Needs Me” was spine-tingling. Colin Black as Bill Sykes was truly evil and his “My Name” was chilling. At this performance the parts of Oliver Twist and the Artful Dodger were played by Kenna Johnston and Daniel Thomson respectfully. Blonde, tousle-haired Kenna was perfect in the role and her rendition of “Where Is Love?” was heart-rending. Daniel had the real cheeky-chappy look required for his role and looked a natural for leader of Fagin’s gang in their ensemble numbers. Sandy Duncan, in his first lead role, was outstanding as Fagin. He portrayed the comedy and pathos in the character equally well, this being particularly clear in his marvellous rendition of “Reviewing the Situation”. Strong support was given by Mike and Louisa Brown (Mr & Mrs Sowerberry), Ken Smith (Mr Brownlow) and Trish Brown (Mrs Bedwin). The set, designed and built by company members, was simple but effective, changing easily and quickly between the various indoor and outdoor scenes. Costuming was good and appropriate to the period. Well done to everyone for a most enjoyable show.
