It was a pleasure to attend Wombwell & District Amateur Operatic Society’s latest production, Oliver! This show always goes down well with cast and audiences alike with many well known songs, great characters and the opportunity for children to perform.

With a great set, stunning costumes (well done wardrobe team) and great characterisations , left audience members wanting more!

The title role of Oliver, was played by Zach Marsden. Zach gave us a lovely performance and a great rendition of Where Is Love. Zach was well supported by Logan Marsden as The Artful Dodger, who sang with great gusto. The rest of the children in Fagin’s gang performed well, in particular Ava Griffiths as Charlie Bates.

Becca Booth, gave a maternal and strong performance as Nancy, who worked well with the children in the I’d Do Anything number, where she was joined by Bet, played by Tegan Haywood.

Society favourite and stalwart, Sue Gent, gave us a comedy masterclass as Mrs Sowerberry. Another couple of stalwarts who had the audience laughing was Josephine Owen and Les Smith as Widow Cortney and Mr Bumble. These two make a great on stage partnership.

Dan Wilkinson was simply fabulous as Bill Sykes. Dan was every inch the Sykes that we expect, scary, intimidating, smouldering and at times, rather hot! Great performance.

Chris Wakeford, made a great Fagin, and was able to make the part is own, while still giving us the Fagin we all know and love.

It was an honour to be able to present long service medals to the cast after the performance. 20 years for Cheryl and 60 years for Jen.

Thank you all for an enjoyable evening at theatre.
