~~What a lovely large company Mansfield Operatic Society is, obviously enhanced this year by its wonderful cast of children in Fagin’s gang, the workhouse and the street scenes. The children were excellent both as an ensemble and in their individual performances particularly Dodger (Nathan Stubbs) and Oliver (Daniel Tucker), who’s rendition of ‘Where Is Love’ was very strong. Other characters of note included Bill Sykes (Wayne Shutt), Nancy (Jane Wright) and Mr Sowerberry (Ian Wragg). Terry Bramwell was a delightful actor to watch with his controlled portrayal of Mr Brownlow whilst Robert Phillips was an excellent Fagin. Robert was in complete control of all his scenes maintaining his character throughout giving us the comedy and pathos that was required. It was a shame scene changes had to happen during both Fagin and Nancy’s main emotional songs. There were many interesting characters in this lively production enhanced by good costumes, lighting and a superb set with lots of levels, entrances and exits, including into the pit, which was perhaps over used at times. This production benefitted greatly from the band that were very well balanced and well led by Paul giving us all the traditional songs we recognise in this lovely musical. It was unfortunate that at times all we could hear singing were those with mics when the stage was full of people and in fact some of the balance was far too loud, particularly when there was shouting or screaming. This production, directed by Pam Frith, was somewhat light-hearted and not perhaps as gritty as I was expecting, but was thoroughly enjoyed by the full houses.
