This production of Oliver was much lighter than the more traditional stage versions I have seen previously. The opening number of Food Glorious Food sung by the Urchins was rousing and the youngest Urchin certainly had the audience captivated.  But when Young Archie Jolly voiced the immortal words ‘please Sir I want some more’ it was obvious that he was going to be an excellent Oliver and we weren’t disappointed; he also sang his solo beautifully. His diction was also very good, I could hear every word.

Robert Hollis and Heather Marshall as Mr Bumble and Widow Corney bounced off each other well. I would have liked Mr Bumble to have been a little more menacing and commanding though. David Verrinder was well cast as Mr Sowerberry as was Carolin Warren as Mrs Sowerby and the coffin scene was very funny and well-constructed. I did think that Thomas Jackson was a little young as Noah Claypole although he was suitably nasty to Oliver.

Nicholas Wolloshin was an able Artful Dodger but could have been a bit cheekier. Lucy Sewell was a very strong Nancy although she too had a wandering tendency (like Robert Hollis) when singing. I have nothing against movement when songs are sung, but I do like to see a purpose for it.  There were good supporting roles from Peter Goodson as Sikes and Graham Jones as Mr Brownlow. It was good to see such a large chorus during the town and Inn scenes. The tap dance version of Who Will Buy was novel.

Hugh Farey gave an outstanding performance as Fagin; his portrayal was very good and the songs were sung extremely well and his footwork very nimble. Well done Hugh and thank you Conquest for another enjoyable production.
