The Phil chose to repeat this popular musical, having staged it a number of years ago. Its appeal to the public may be waning slightly, however, although it still retains a high ranking in District 4. Production and music were in the assured hands of the established duo of Artistic Directors and the audiences were treated to a feast of their favourite lyrics and with a plot they all knew. Connor Kirkpatrick played a handsome lead as Curly with Sharon McDonald as his sweetheart Laurey.    The President of the Society Margaret Nicol played a dignified and forceful Aunt Eller and Adam Smith took the role of the creepy farmhand Jud Fry with excellent interpretations of Jud’s two dark and difficult solos. Lorna McColm was in her element as Ado Annie Carnes – a real comedienne – and Adam Dawson provided her counterweight as Will Parker. I always look forward to the characterization of Ali Hakim and was not disappointed in Colin McDonald’s performance in the role. Rachel Howat had the shrill laugh and scatty demeanor for the role of Gertie Cummings which she exploited to the full. Andrew Miller played the dignified Andrew Carnes and the remaining principals were well chosen.
The cast included a troupe of four dancers and an ensemble of Farmers, Cowmen and Townspeople giving the stage a vibrant and busy appearance. The Society has maintained its standards and all can be proud of a most successful production.
