It always amazes me that such a rural community with limited resources can produce a show in a village hall that is well rehearsed and slick, and encourages local people to show off their talents to provide the audience with a thoroughly entertaining evening.  This production of ‘Oklahoma!’ was no exception.  When the curtains opened we were looking at the excellent set constructed by Ken Branson and Alex Swailes, and painted by Cathy and Nigel Jenkins. This innovative construction continued to be changed throughout the show to constantly set the scenes of ‘Oklahoma’ and in particular, Jud’s room was extremely effective.

The show was well cast and moved along at a lively pace under the expertise of the Musical Director John Lewis who exhibited super talent in his use of the score and only himself in the musical ensemble! Andrew Fletcher as ‘Curly’ was excellent and had obviously studied the part in great depth; he was charming, flirty, authoritive and sang extremely well.  Georgia Garrington as ‘Laurey’ showed off her talents as a fine little actress.  ‘Ado Annie’, always a lovely part to play, was brought to life superbly by Linda Milburn who once again played her role with insight and expertise, and was just perfect for the part. ‘Will Parker’ ably played by Robert Famelton was a good match for Ado Annie. This pair was complemented by the addition of the very funny ‘Ali Hakim’ played by Mike Jevons.  ‘Aunt Eller’, was played by Sue Wood  who was in character all the time, showing sympathy and curtness when required, and made sure she kept ‘Jud Fry’, who was played by Bill Wood, in place. I understand that these two were new to the stage, so well done to you both on very polished performances. I particularly liked Bill’s interpretation of Jud in that it was both deep and sensitive, and when he sang ‘Lonely Room’ he revealed an insight into the character that I had never thought of in all the years of seeing this show. Thought-provoking indeed!

The supporting principals were good and delivered their lines clearly and kept their characters going throughout the show. Backed by a strong chorus the show was lively and fun, and at the same time provided convincingly serious emotion when needed.  Anne Swailes and Isobel Robinson are to be congratulated for their costumes so many of which had extra touches to make them authentic and colourful. I also loved the extra addition of the ‘Hoe Down’ musicians

Whilst the opening scene was very colourful and busy, on reflection I do feel Curly should have had the opportunity to sing this in the traditional way as he certainly had the voice to do it, and in some way with the chorus being on stage and singing it detracted from the plot.  I also think it would be good if at all possible some percussion could be used to complement the paino/keyboard music.

In this community production under the competent direction of David Richardson there are too many people to mention, suffice to say I know how much committed team effort is needed to produce a show and look after the audience…..so my ‘CONGRATULATIONS’ to you all for a very successful evening and a much appreciated warm welcome and hospitality. It has been lovely getting to know you all.
