Oklahoma is such an established part of the amateur theatre repertoire that is easy to take it for granted. Well-known tunes, lots of dancing and a bit of comedy – it almost produces itself. Except it doesn’t. A lot of hard work is needed with a bit of flair. That is what TWODS produced here.
From the moment the curtain rose on a Beautiful Mornin’ beautifully sung by Jamie Thomas as Curly, we knew we were going to watch something special. The sets, lighting and costumes all added to the atmosphere. The music is key to this production and the orchestra, shy to have under the baton of MD David Grubb, did an excellent job and due credit to David also for the disciplined singing of the chorus.
Sometimes you find a weak link in the principal line up of a show but in this show, every main character was well acted and exceptionally well sung. Eleanor Bell was a charming Laurey. As the morose, menacing and vindictive Jud Fry, Matt Hall gave a towering performance. Comedy was provided by Mike Knell as Ali Hakim. Mike is a joy to watch as he is consistent in perfecting whichever role he takes on. Georgia Fawcett made the most of playing scatty Ado Annie and with Tom Tapsfield with his fine singing voice, as Will Parker, they went well together. Julie McDowell as Aunt Eller did a terrific portrayal of an older woman. All the other minor roles were all well acted and sung. Jon Alcock as Ike Skidmore; Kevin Randall as Cord Elam; Peter Crockford as Andrew Carnes and June Fuller as Gertie Cummins having to sustain a raucous laugh.
Elizabeth Witt’s choreography, for me, was the highlight of the show, especially the dream scene. It was inventive but looked simple and what a joy to see all those men dancing! Director Colin Moore can be well pleased with his achievement in keeping this staple classic of amateur theatre still infused with vitality and freshness. Once again, TWODS have kept up the high standard I have come to expect from them.
