This musical was the first joint effort of composer Richard Rogers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II which was based on the play by Lynn Riggs entitled “Green Grow the Lilacs”. The story follows the courtship of farm girl Laurey Williams who is pursued by two very different characters - one is Curly McLain, a chirpy young cowboy and the other is Jud Fry, a morose farmhand who is very much a loner.
The production was extremely well cast and the acting of a very high standard; there was committed and enthusiastic application from everyone appearing on stage. The choral work was excellent and the musical accompaniment superb. The well designed sets were strongly constructed and displayed to good effect through a wonderful lighting plan. Costumes were very appropriate and well fitting.
It was good to see the actors moving about and making full use of the stage space available to them. The fight and crowd scenes were strongly staged and the innovative choreography was exciting.
It was wonderful to witness the “dream ballet” exquisitely performed.
Well done all who were involved in this lively entertainment!
