Oklahoma!, one of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s best loved musicals is a show I never tire of. The wonderful score came alive instantly played by an excellent orchestra well directed by the M.D who controlled the balance between the pit and stage never over powering the singers.

Craig Young was perfectly suited to the part of Curly with a relaxed stage presence, a twinkle in his eye and a fine baritone voice. Annabel Hamid too was a most convincing Laurey looking, singing and acting the part with ease. The duet ‘People Will Say We’re In Love’ demonstrated a natural chemistry between the two and their voices complemented each other. Laurey of course has a real conflict of emotions trying to conceal her true feelings for Curly while dealing with her fear and abhorrence of Jud Fry and Annabel conveyed this turmoil admirably.

Michael McFarlane was one of the most intimidating Jud’s I have seen. His menacing portrayal and powerful singing created a real tension especially with Laurey and in the dream ballet. The smoke house scene was particularly memorable as was the number ‘Lonely Room’ which was extremely dramatic and spine chilling.

Leah Kincer was  delightful as the wide eyed innocent Ado Annie who just couldn’t say no to the love struck Will Parker most ably played by Colin Povey and the flirtatious Ali Hakim (Peter Tomassi) who timed and put across his comedy lines very well indeed.

This was an extremely well-cast show with all of the supporting characters delivering first class performances. The chorus of Laurey’s friends, Farmers and Cowhands were in fine form. Their singing throughout was strong and gutsy while the choreography in the big number ‘The Farmer and The Cowhand’ and the title song were energetic and spirited. It appeared that everyone on stage was enjoying every minute of the production.

The direction and choreography throughout was highly commendable. Will Parker and the male chorus excelled in ‘Kansas City’ and the Dream Ballet was a real ‘tour de force’ by all of the cast but particularly Debbie McConnell as Laurey and Craig as the real Curly.

I have performed in and seen Oklahoma many times but this was one of the best all round productions I have seen. Effective, subtle lighting helped create some dramatic and magical atmospheres.

This was a most enjoyable production most worthy of the audience’s accolade and appreciation shown at the end, Great show.
