Jo Galloway’s excellent production of John Steinbeck’s 1937 play, based on his 1936 novel of the same name, put the audience through a roller coaster of emotions – from laughter to tears and from compassion to anger. The cast of 8 men and 2 women – plus one dog – on Allen Perrin’s beautifully designed set brought us a true depiction of life for those living on a 1930’s ranch in Northern California. Steven Kelly was outstanding as large, gentle-hearted, simple-minded ranch hand Lennie portraying the character’s physical strength and child-like qualities equally well. Matthias Kremer as George, his work and travel companion (as well as loyal protector) gave a masterful and commanding performance. The last scene in which George shoots Lennie to avoid him being lynched, while telling him about their dreams for the future together, was beautifully handled by both actors. Trevor Nicol as old-timer ranch hand Candy, who joins George and Lennie in their plan in owning a small holding, gave an extremely strong performance. Tom Masterton as Curley, the son of the ranch boss, gave a very convincing performance of an aggressive bully and jealous husband. Jay MacGregor as Curley’s wife played the part of the lonely young woman, whose desire for company brought about the tragic ending of the piece, to perfection. Strong support was given by Brian Howlett (The Boss), Julian McArdle (Slim), Scott Crichton (Carlson), Euan Sinclair (Whit) and Anne Bamborough (The Mother). Special mention must be made of the perfectly behaved Roxie as Candy’s dog – the star of the show everyone in the audience wanted to speak to in the foyer at the end of the performance! Congratulations to everyone involved on another superb production.
