Returning to the Norbury stage, on this occasion piano and drums were positioned at the rear of the stage giving the opportunity to play on a generously deep area up to and including a filled in pit. An impressive star cloth was all that was necessary to set the scene for excerpts from several musicals.
The opening sequence of the show from Little Shop of Horrors included an excellent portrayal by Cameron Morris as Seymour with spot on phrasing and a great company number led by Alecsandra Gheorghe, followed by Lydia Dymock singing a sweet rendition of ‘Somewhere that’s green’ with plenty of poise.
The company with mainly Debut and Spotlight group members provided lots of energy in a sequence from Matilda, utilising 5 of their members sharing the lines for Matilda herself. I particularly liked Georgie Levine singing ‘My House’ beautifully with feeling as Miss Honey and utilising the front of stage area. ‘Revolting Children’ concluded Act 1 with energy.
Three numbers from School of Rock opened Act 2 with the company singing ‘Horace Green’, ‘Time to Play’ led by Lexi Ford and a well projected ‘If only you would listen’ sung by the company.
The final sequence with predominantly Encore members was very strong with particularly notable contributions from Max Price, Ella Hinson, Aran Hall, Alecsandra again, George Forsyth and Noah Glyde. Throughout, the choreography by Ellie Morris had variety and particularly strong during the final sequence. Piano and drums supported the company well, who were also well-disciplined side stage.
I look forward to H.M.S. Pinafore, all rehearsed in one week, in August!
