It was with great anticipation that I visited BAOS as this was my first musical in my new role. I was not disappointed! From the opening number I knew myself and the audience were in for a treat.
The story is a time honoured tale of boy meets girl then many problems arise but all ends happily. The boy and girl were played with style and excellent vocal talent by Alan Matheson and Kirsty Davidson. Kirsty sang two of my favourite Gershwin numbers with lovely empathy.
The comedy was introduced with a fast talking Bootlegger/Butler (Graeme Baird), Prohibitionist/Duchess (Ali Niven), Sidekick/Chef (Ross Robertson) and the Self Proclaimed Finest Interpreter of Modern Dance in the World (Gill Matheson). What a Hoot! Superbly played by all with many funny scenes involving athletic antics and clever sets.
Add to this well cast list we have a wise cracking Police chief (Keith Cuthill), a stuffy Senator (Fergus Bridges), a glamorous showgirl (Emma Ferguson) and a controlling Mother/Secret bootlegger (Teresa Warden). Well done all for taking your roles to a next level and completing the picture.
Special mention must go to the supporting cast, the showgirls with their careful and stylish choreography and the Vice Squad and the Society of Dry Women. Your enjoyment of the fun of this production came over to myself and the audience and gave a finishing sparkle to the show.
I was impressed by the simple but effective set. The production was slick despite the tricky set changes, the well-rehearsed choreography was suited to the period and the music was in capable hands. Thank you Graeme, Liz and Colin for your obvious dedication to this project. Well done backstage crew and band for your hard work and commitment. Finally thanks to BAOS for your welcome and hospitality.
