Mossley Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society's Next Gen delivered a vibrant, high-energy production of Newsies Jr, bursting with passion, talent, and youthful drive. From start to finish, this was a performance that celebrated teamwork, dedication, and the power of young voices coming together to tell a story.
The choreography, led by Molly Mae France, was nothing short of outstanding. Technically sharp yet full of character, the movement filled the stage with life and momentum. The balance between strong unison work and individual flair was beautifully achieved, creating a dynamic visual language throughout the show. Every number felt purposeful and exciting, and the cast clearly trusted the choreography, throwing themselves into it with confidence.
Musically, this production was a powerhouse. Under the musical direction of Katherine, the singing — both solo and ensemble — was of a very high standard. There were standout solo moments alongside rich, atmospheric ensemble numbers filled with strong harmonies and depth. The chorus worked particularly well together, creating a full and energetic sound that supported the storytelling. While there is always room to continue developing diction, this was a very minor note in what was otherwise an impressive display of vocal talent.
All of this was expertly wrapped together by the direction of Chris Mather. The staging and acting choices were thoughtfully executed, allowing the story to flow clearly and keeping the energy consistent throughout. The young cast were guided well, resulting in confident performances across the board. With only the occasional moment of sightline blocking — something easily refined — the direction was strong and effective.
The set design made clever use of a projector screen, transporting us through a variety of New York locations including offices, prisons, and city streets. This flexible approach worked well within the space, allowing quick transitions and supporting the fast-paced nature of the show.
There were several standout performances throughout the production, each contributing something special to the overall success of the piece: Evan Stericker led the company as Jack Kelly with confidence and professionalism. His stage presence anchored the performance, guiding the audience through the story with ease and authority. A strong and assured leading performance.
Catherine Donnelly, as Katherine Plumber, held her own beautifully. With confident stage presence and a clear sense of character, she proved herself to be a talent to be reckoned with, bringing strength and poise to the role.
Oli Cunliffe and Sam Sheppard shone as brothers Davey and Les. Their connection on stage felt natural and genuine, adding warmth and heart to the production. Oli’s dance ability and technique were exceptional, matched by strong vocals and acting — a performer who is exciting to watch. Sam’s portrayal of Les was full of cheeky charm and confidence, with a stage presence well beyond his years.
Georgia Ennis delivered a standout performance as Medda Larkin. Her powerful vocals and commanding presence created a wonderful balance of class and sass. She brought depth and polish to every scene and was truly missed whenever she wasn’t on stage.
A final and very well-deserved shoutout must go to the ensemble, whose hard work and professionalism were evident throughout. Consisting of 18 young performers, every member held their own with confidence and commitment. From my seat, I was able to see entrances and exits clearly, and the professionalism shown — staying in character from the wings to the stage and back again — was genuinely impressive.
Their dance technique and vocal ability were strong, and their awareness on stage was commendable. Special mentions to Ella, Rosie, Freddie, and Izzy, who demonstrated excellent stagecraft, subtly correcting props and set moments in character without breaking the illusion.
Thank you for inviting my guest and I to enjoy this production of Newsies Jr. It was a joy to witness such talent, teamwork, and passion on stage. You should all be incredibly proud of what you achieved.
