I attended the production of Nell Gwynn at Oldbury Rep. This is the tale of Nell Gwynne and King Charles II which is well known to all. This humorous play was written by Jessica Swale and won the Olivier Award for the Best New Comedy in 2016.
It was a thoroughly entertaining evening attended by an appreciative audience. The humorous aspects were well received.
All parts were well cast so congratulations to the audition team for a job well done.
Nell Gwynne was played superbly by Mariel Marcono-Oliver and played to perfection. Aided by Phil Astle as King Charles II. Both worked well together. Several actors played two or more roles and it was not easy to notice that they had. Credit to them for changing characters so well.
I would not like to single out any of the supporting cast as it would be difficult all I can do is congratulate them for a job well done.
The production was directed by Paul Steventon-Mark aided by a superb production team. All parts of the production went smoothly from one scene to another. Lighting and sound were great, and the costumes were typical of the period. The team could not be faulted for their hard work.
