Hearing Nell Gwynn heckle at the playhouse theatre, Charles Hart decides to train her as an actress, albeit women have yet to appear on stage. When Charles II grants permission for women to act, Nell joins Hart in the King's Company. Her admission to the Company is backed by its writer John Dryden, director Thomas Killigrew, and most of the actors except Edward Kynaston, who had previously played the company's female parts. When Charles sees Nell onstage he is greatly attracted to her. He visits her backstage regularly and the pair begin an affair, which eventually leads to a rift between her and Hart.
Tom Paine provided us with a successful debut KODS production as Director, which embodied the atmosphere of the period and was enhanced by the four musicians located above the set looking down on the action. Jill Parmenter as ‘Nell’ and Ian Jones as ‘King Charles’ gave excellent performances throughout with great articulation and presence.
Solid support was provided by the rest of the cast including Nell’s sister ‘Rose’ played by Salli Hunt, Chris Paine as the writer ‘ John Dryden’ and Pat Scully as ‘Old Ma Gwynn’, whilst Paul Brewster as ‘Thomas Killigrew’ and Melanie Jones as ‘Nancy’ added to the fun.
The set and lighting added to the atmosphere and the lavish costumes were very impressive. Thank you for the invitation and the warm welcome from KODS members and I look forward to seeing your next production.
