                                                                NATIVITY THE MUSICAL

Thank you for inviting Phyllis and I to your production. It was lovely to see such a full house at the Carnegie.

On entering the auditorium the impact of the open stage was excellent. The simplicity of the set was brilliant, the false prosceneiums and the borders in a vibrant blue colour spotted with illuminated stars, which stayed for the whole production, gave a professional look to the stage. The way the different scenes were depicted with projections and clever use of props was simple and helped the production to move at a good pace throughout. In the second Act we were treated to two different flying sequences which were executed very well and added to the magical feel of the show. The lighting added to the excitement of the piece.

The sound, on the night I attended, unfortunately wasn’t particularly good. The levels seemed to be set too high which caused some feedback and I felt that the orchestra was over amplified. Perhaps if some of the principal characters had spoken more slowly and projected more the microphones need not have been set at such a high level. I appreciate how difficult it can be to get the sound fine tuned in the time available.

All the pupils of St Bernadette’s and Oakmoor Prep played their parts very well and were clearly enjoying themselves, well done to all. All cast members also played their parts well. Stuart Evans played a very convincing Mr Poppy, I thought he was excellent. Luka Anderson as Teacher Paul Maddens sang well and Jamie Hill, as the Hollywood producer, proved that you don’t need a major role to shine.

Once again congratulations to Director Clark Wilkinson - his vision and professionalism, as always, shines through. Well done to everyone involved with the production.
