Another colourful show from Tamworth Musical Theatre Company. The company last performed this show in 2006 so was due for a revival with its memorable songs and lyrics.
The set was a clever combination with a bookcase cloth on the back wall which gave the great impression for Higgin’s study. The cast effortlessly changed scenes when required, this was hardly noticeable. Costumes gave the desired effect to the sell out audience. The whole company were great vocally with fantastic energy and they were well focused throughout. The company could have done with a few more men but this did not stop the whole ensemble coming together to give a good performance.
The principals in this production worked well together and came across well. I enjoyed the performances for Abigail Roberts as Mrs. Higgins and Rebecca Wilson as Mrs. Enysford-Hill. Debbie Gill played Mrs. Pearce who kept the household in order and was motherly toward Eliza, just how she should be. Rob Travis-Anderson played Freddy Eynsford-Hill, who was besotted with Eliza, acted well. Andrew Britton played Alfred P. Doolittle, he gave a marvellous performance with good vocal ability and enthusiasm. I would have liked to see more of this character. Andrew Gilman and Henry Higgins and Jack Broughton as Hugh Pickering gave good support to each other and came across well to the audience. Nikki Downs as Eliza Doolittle gave a fantastic performance and the whole audience joined with her on her journey from flower girl to society Queen.
This was a lovely production, enjoyed by young and old alike.
Many thanks to the company for the invite.
