By George they’ve done it! A very successful production of this favourite musical. An excellent set made in house designed by Andrew Johns and painted by Richard Rumbellow. They had a crew who moved it with ease.
Excellent costumes mostly made in house, including those Ascot Hats. Eliza’s costumes especially made by couturier member Linda Grey. Others hired in from Costume Workshop on the Isle of Wight.
The production was well cast with Laura Mayhew as Eliza an excellent choice this part, singing with gusto and never losing her London accent, Martin Leigh made the part of Higgins come alive and was an excellent foil for Eliza’s character. Dave Love was Colonel Pickering giving a true character and good foil for Higgins all through. A supurb performance copy of Stanley Holloway to a tee was Darren Nunn as Doolittle. I loved Tom Mayhew as Freddy Eynsford Hill he caught the character just right and was in excellent voice.Stephanie Brown led the maids and servants as Mrs Pearce keeping Higgins in line. The choreography was terrific especially for the number I’m Getting Marriied in the Morning”, many congratulations to Luke Berry who put everyone through some difficult paces. The whole production was backed by an enthusiastic chorus.
Many congratulations must be given to Owen Berry our Director for the first time, having previously appeared in IODS productions including a perfect performance of Ali Hakim in Oklahoma .
The Company had near full houses each night, which shows that “the old ones are the best!”Nobody was disappointed and gave rousing applause at the end.
