This very strongly cast play, was well performed with excellent characterisation throughout. Nick Grainger gave us an outstanding portrayal as Rudyard Kipling the autocratic Edwardian father, falling apart as the terrors of war undermined his firmly held beliefs. He was well supported by Jane Durant as his long suffering wife. Louis Gale's performance as Jack was in and out in that as a devoted son he was very good but some of his diction got lost as time wore on. Laura Bateman however as Elsie Kipling was excellent throughout. Mention must go to Chris Marshall for his outstanding and totally believable performance as the shell shocked Irish guardsman. The men from the Ministry and the other Irish Guards gave equally strong support. The whole play was uplifted by the evocative set design from Andrew McGowan, which was very well constructed with the trench scene extremely convincing.
