Having attended only a handful of showcase events, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I was invited to North West Theatre Arts Company’s Musical Theatre Showcase. The stage setup was minimalist yet effective, featuring a two-tiered rostra at the rear and a simple white backdrop.
From the opening number, I was struck by the strength of the ensemble’s vocals. Their harmonies were tight, and the young performers exuded confidence on stage. Spanning ages 7 to 17, it’s no small feat to find music that allows every member of such a diverse group to shine. However, the selection was both thoughtful and engaging, blending popular, well-loved songs with more obscure pieces, creating a dynamic and varied program.
The lighting design complemented the performances beautifully, enhancing the simplicity of the set and allowing the performers to take center stage. Interestingly, there was no dialogue or formal introductions to the songs, with each piece flowing seamlessly into the next—an artistic choice that worked well to maintain the momentum.
While the entire show was brimming with talent, several moments stood out for me. Arabella Dasilva, at just seven years old, delivered a memorable solo in "When I Grow Up." Performing alone on stage is no small challenge, but she excelled, her eyes fixed intently on the musical director, who was cleverly concealed beside a pillar—so much so that I hadn’t noticed her presence until that moment, which I count as a testament to her subtle guidance.
Poppy Evans’ rendition of "Words Words Words" from The Witches of Eastwick was another highlight. Her precision and energy were remarkable, handling the song’s intricate, rapid-fire lyrics with skill and poise. It was a tough challenge, but she rose to it splendidly.
The ensemble performance of "Welcome to the Rock" was a standout as well, growing in energy and confidence as the song progressed. The accents were impressively delivered, adding to the authenticity and charm of the piece. Throughout the show, the group choreography—devised by Katie Gough—was a testament to the hard work and discipline of the cast. The routines were polished and performed with enthusiasm.
Finally, "My Shot" posed a significant challenge due to its mix of close harmonies and rap sections. Stephanie Cannavan, the focal point of this number, delivered a compelling performance, seamlessly balancing the song’s demanding elements.
Thank you to North West Theatre Arts Company for your warm welcome and hospitality and I look forward to seeing you all soon.
